Vexillology — the study of flag history, symbolism, and design — offers fascinating insights into national identities. To my eye, one of the most visually and symbolically intriguing flags is that of Saint Lucia. Designed in 1979 by local artist Sir Dunstan St. Omer to mark the nation’s independence, the flag stands out for its bold modernist geometry and vivid contrasts of color.
The blue backdrop, reflecting the hues of tropical skies and the emerald tones of the Caribbean Sea, symbolizes loyalty and devotion. A centrally positioned isosceles triangle visually dominates the composition, drawing the eye upward and evoking a sense of growth and aspiration. Its shape recalls the majestic twin peaks of the Pitons — a defining emblem of this island paradise.
The triangles overlap, and their interplay of colors deepens the meaning. Gold represents the sunny Caribbean — a land of prosperity and abundance. Black and white signify the island’s African and European roots, while the design emphasizes the prominence of Black culture. Ultimately, the composition conveys a vision of racial harmony and collaborative coexistence.
Bounty Dark is just as much a 'premium rum' by name as the previously reviewed Tres Países. In the interest of fairness, we’ll therefore evaluate it using the same criteria for what qualifies as a so-called premium spirit.
Sugarcane farming in the region gave way to banana plantations in the 1960s. These days, most of the molasses used is imported from the Dominican Republic.
Bounty Rum is produced by Saint Lucia Distillers, a company with deep-rooted traditions and equipped with an impressive array of stills: one column still and three pot stills (1 small John Dore + 1 large John Dore + 1 Vendome). While the original 'premium' blend relied solely on Coffey column distillates, it has since evolved to include a richer pot still component from the Vendome.
As stated by the producer: “A blend of column and pot-distilled rum, aged for two to three years in ex-Bourbon casks.” The barrels are sourced from leading American whiskey brands — Jim Beam, Buffalo Trace, and Jack Daniel’s.
Let’s be clear: Bounty targets the local market and is positioned as a value-oriented brand.
Promoted under the banner “The Spirit of Saint Lucia,” Bounty has long stood as the flagship of St. Lucia Distillers. Still, when it comes to the premium segment, brands like Admiral Rodney — and even Chairman’s Reserve — lead the way.
St. Lucia Distillers is owned by Groupe Bernard Hayot, with global distribution and branding handled by Spiribam.
A cylindrical bottle with embossed glass, golden topography over deep indigo, a compass rose outline, and a metal cap. Whether this design qualifies as premium is ultimately a matter of personal taste, individual sensitivity, and — perhaps most importantly — cultural context.
